Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the rate of overweight and obesity, recognition of body image and the determinants of weight control behaviors among adolescents in Korea.

Results: The rate of adolescents who perceive themselves as overweight is higher than the results obtained from the BMI measurement values. 10.4% of male adolescents and 19.3% of female adolescents were trying to lose weight through unhealthy weight control methods such as fasting or eating one type of food. Gender, school grade, perceived health status, body image perception, sadness and despair predicted prevalence rate of weight control behaviors.

Conclusions: Adolescents perceived themselves to be fatter than their actual weight. Female adolescents tended to have unhealthy weight control behaviors. This study may have a significant impact on the formulation and implementation of interventions to prevent adolescent obesity and increase physical activity and healthy diet behaviors.
